Painting chain link fence. Without proper preparation the new paint may flake and more rust may develop. Lay down drop cloths or pieces of cardboard on both sides of the chain link fence to prevent paint from dripping onto the ground below. This is especially important if the fence is surrounded by grass or plants. Step 2 scrape away any loosened or flaking paint with a wire brush.
First remove any flaking paint rust or caked on grime with a wire brush. Chemicals from paint can kill plants. Then use a long nap roller to apply the aluminum paint to both sides of the fence. Slowly work the roller over the chain link reaching into tight bends and deep recesses.
